I have listened to Yerushalayim Shel Zahav so often and sung it so often that I needed to see for myself what this story is about Naomi Shemer having copied it from this Basque folk song. The solution is to listen carefully to both. There are similarities in the stanzas, suggesting some (acknowledged) influence. But the refrain, which is what everyone sings together, is the nucleus and the climax of the song. It is as follows in Hebrew: Yerushalayim shel zahav Veshel nechoshet veshel or Halo lechol shirayich ani kinor. There is Zero similarity in this part. Ms. Shemer is reported to have admitted to influence from hearing this song in a posthumous letter. But then, I saw a report that she confessed to copying her melody from this song. Such a statement is completely false in its generality, I think. That cannot be true to anyone who carefully listens to the music. The report just gives the impression that she lazily copied the whole song note by note. I am suspecting that everyone hears the opening seven eight notes and draws their conclusions too fast, much too fast. PS This song is a lullaby. We do not know who composed it. It is kind of universal common cultural good. It would be pointless to claim that Paco Ibáñez plagiarized it. It is clearly not his, though. It is everybody's. What would be the difference if Ms. Shemer had heard it from the mouth of a child while on a trip through Basque land? PPS There may be a political dimension, I read somewhere, maybe, as follows. Israel conquered Jerusalem in 1967, when this song was composed. "Jerusalem of gold" may not have pleased some people. Perhaps hence the stance of resisting the critics, who knows. Conflict in the Middle East? Really? You must be kidding. PPPS! I just discovered something: the connections between the phrases of the stanzas by guitar play and general accompaniment. Listen, e.g., to the original classical version by Shuli Natan. These supportive flosks are very different in Ms. Shemer's composition. Very sparkly and melodic and completely original. They completely change the Basque lullaby when it comes to the stanzas. I had overlooked this. When I listen to the IMO greatest composer of music ever, Pergolesi, and the inimitable and mostly forgotten Neapolitan composers of his time, I never lose track of the way they connect the phrases. It is half of the pleasure. Ms. Shemer made it work so much better (IMO) by the connective arpeggios or whatever they are called. The devil is in the details. But by all means, have a listen for yourself and see what you think. A plagiarizing copyist could not have done those with regard to this Basque folk song. Only an accomplished composer could. PPPPS PPPPS I forgot something else. Naomi Shemer wrote both the poetic texts and music of so many songs and produced a prolific opus. She was a fully trained musician. Not everyone may know this. Her songs Al kol eleh and Hurshat Ha-Ekaliptos are about as famous as Yerushalayim Shel Zahav and as good sounding. Focusing on this obvious similarity would lead to a complete distortion of her stature as a stellar musician.

I first heard this song while visiting the museum on Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem. The words and historical significance of the song were explained on the wall, and the song played on a loop. Just as I was reading about it, a large group of young IDF soldiers who happened to be visiting the museum stopped by the words and sang the whole song through with her. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life.
